CPTED for Home and Business

Perhaps you have just bought your first home. Or maybe you want to update the crime prevention through environmental design for your home or business. You can use the ways below to help achieve this.

First you can use the CPTED tactic of territorial reinforcement. This consists of keeping your home or business looking busy and occupied. Keep your lawn mowed and landscape nice and fresh. Add trees to give it more of a lived in look and feel. This will deter criminals as they will know this is an active place. When planting bushes, make sure that they are only to the bottom of the lower level windows. This will help to keep criminals away as they know someone inside may see him or her.

If you have a security system you want to place the signs on your home or business. This is a great warning to a thief and he or she will think twice before trespassing.

With natural access control you can protect your business by installing a maze type of entrance to your bathroom as it is a wonderful deterrent for criminals. The two doors to get into your businesses bathroom is an invitation to a thief as he or she will feel much more confident that no one will see him/her commit the crime.

Another CPTED of natural access control is to create one easy to find entrance into your home or business.

You can protect your home or business with natural surveillance. Natural surveillance to your home or business includes using good lighting to protect pathways leading to and from your building, at entrance and exit areas, parking lots, driveways, mailboxes, etc. When installing lighting make sure it is facing the correct way so as not to blind neighbors. Make sure that the lighting is not too bright as well. You want your neighbors to report anything suspicious and with blinding lighting they will not be able to do so. When a criminal thinks he or she can be seen breaking into your house or business, he/she is more likely to walk away and find another target.

Keep curtains, shades and blinds open so criminals will think someone is home or at your business and may be watching them.

Peace of mind is very important when trying to achieve crime prevention through environmental design for your home or business.
